Squires Rest Reviews

There were lots of great things about the property for our party of 20 adults and children. Comfy beds, lots of lovely soft towels, great fridge and freezer space and PERFECT PEACE with gorgeous views. Games room and hot tub were an absolute boon. Shame that there were a few maintenance plumbing issues and a some rough edges. All in all a great venue however.

As a large house for a large family gettogether we couldn't fault the space and the size of the bedrooms. Beds were comfortable and the communal spaces were ideal. Lovely location. However, the property wasn't the cleanest we've ever stayed at. The main oven hadn't been cleaned and kicked out a lot of smoke when we turned it on and carried on for about half an hour. The sharp knives supplied weren't any use for preparing food. We understand it's an old property but there was a lot of cobwebs and general build up of dust which wouldn't take much to clean. The upper floor individual shower room smelled really bad and we just stayed out of it. The shower heads in most bathrooms were leaking out of the sides. There was mould on the upper ensuite ceiling with a plastic tub under the toilet to catch, what we assume, was a leak. There were no instructions for anything including the hot tub, oil fire and AGA. No wood provided for the wood burner. Lots of stains on the carpets. And the there was the radiators.... So noisy during the night, the noise woke us all up so we turned them off for our stay during the night. Batteries were missing from the remote TV in the games room which was a really good facility. When we put our batteries in, it didn't work anyway and we found the actual remote on the last day in the basement under the settee cushions. No fridge in the separate cottage although there were 2 in the main house. If we're being honest, we felt the house needs a bit of a refurb especially considering how much we paid which, value for money, wasn't worth it. We have stayed in a lot of properties, large and small, and this one left us disappointed especially as it was for a 50th birthday celebration. We were expecting a lot better.
The best beds & bedding weve ever slept in Warm & cosy Hot tub, games room ... The best beds & bedding weve ever slept in Warm & cosy Hot tub, games room was fabulous Had some issue with oil aga kept going out but managed using electric cooker Could do with an internet booster
Squires rest is a beautiful home set in the hills of midwales. It's remote enough to feel like you have your own slice of the countryside, but not too far from shops, pubs, takeaways and other activities nearby. The group of 13 friends I went with had plenty of space in the property, between it's sizeable kitchen, large diningseating area, warm and comfy sitting room, and our favourite area the cosy basement sitting room. The bedrooms were all large and wellequipped, many of them with ensuites. During our stay, the Annexe was unfortunately uninhabitable due to the heating not working, making it very cold in December. Our contact for the property did respond quickly, but unfortunately a new part had to be ordered that would not get it fixed whilst we were there. We managed to get everyone in the main house. The fella who came around multiple times to show us how everything works, sort out the hot tub etc, was quick to respond and friendly. The hot tub was a very welcome feature of the property, we had a bit of trouble with the electrics to that outside area of the home, probably due to a severe storm that had hit wales the day we arrived, but for the most part it worked, albeit with lights flickering in the main house! The games room was great, a very large spacious area that could be kept warm enough to enjoy, with a full size snooker table and darts board, comfy sofas and a TV. Both the TVs remotes required us to supply new batteries as they were both flat, unfortunately. Even in mid December, the large house was exceptionally warm, the kitchen was stocked with everything we needed for cooking, the two dishwashers came in handy, and elsewhere the property had plenty of amenities. The wifi was down for the first 2 days again, likely due to the storm. The house was relatively clean, a bit dusty and cobwebby in places but otherwise in good condition. We noticed a slightly leaky oil pipe, and one of the ensuites in the top floor rooms had a leaky toilet, we had to empty the tupperware underneath to keep it overflowing. We felt the place could benefit from some information leaflet on how things in the property worked, like the hot tub, the heating, the rayburn cooker, what goes in what colour bins, etc. Ultimately it's tough to find a nice property of this size for a group of friends to stay, and whilst it had some negatives, I think we all thoroughly enjoyed staying at Squires Rest, it has a very homely feel, plenty of space, warmth and a bit of charm.

We were there as a 3 generation family group, aged from 9 to 80, with two members having reduced mobility. The house, cottage, separate games barn and hot tub all provided ample space for us to enjoy our time together and also find a quiet corner if necessary! We hadn't appreciated that there was a steep slope to walk down to access the property, and several steps inside and out, some inaccessible for those with reduced mobility. Extra handrails might have provided a little more confidence but we managed and it did not detract from our overall enjoyment. The owners were very friendly and dealt swiftly with a couple of minor problems. As the property is very rural, there was no concern about the teens making too m noise and they were delighted with the games room, hot tub and cellar room with TV we took our XBox. It was nice for the adults to have a TVfree living room to relax in. The house was toasty warm throughout with plenty of hot water. Some items in the kitchen needed a wash before use but that is not uncommon in large selfcatering properties. The beds were all immaculately made with unbelievably fluffy pillows and duvets like sleeping in a big marshmallow! As regards local activities, the teens made use of the gym and swimming pool at the leisure centre in Welshpool, whilst the girls enjoyed the indoor market and looking round the shops. We also visited the excellent Big Rock cafe in Porthmadog, went iceskating in Deesside, explored waterfalls in the area and generally appreciated the loveliness of being together in Wales.
Great property, excellent hot tub, great outside bbq area, fabulous games room, great views. Only niggle was the oven and hob space, we managed by juggling everything but it wasn't sufficient for 20 people.

Great property, excellent hot tub, great outside bbq area, fabulous games room, great views. Only niggle was the oven and hob space, we managed by juggling everything but it wasn't sufficient for 20 people.
Cosy and spacious. Was perfect for the family. The location was tranquil, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. No traffic or light pollution. The rooms were all clean and airy. The view from the back of the house is just beautiful. Only one slight issue, the basement, although cosy, needed airing, it was a little stuffy there. The hot tub was very enjoyable. I would definitely recommend this venue for a family staycation.
We had the most wonderful stay at Squires Rest. The house was beautiful and meant that our large group of family and friends could all stay together.
Gareth
Really lovely stay at a massive house surrounded by gorgeous countryside. Huge games room with snooker table, darts etc was used almost constantly. Would be useful to have access to the HDMI ports on big TV in games room to plug in gaming consolesfirestick etc. All in all a wonderful place to stay for a weekend
Joanne
We really enjoyed our stay here. Hot tub and games room were great and kitchens were really good. Comfortable and warm. Wifi was spotty, which caused some difficulties with those working remotely during the holiday, but this was sorted with the owner and sykes post our stay. Would recommend, we had a great time!
Squires Rest was a beautiful location, fantastic house had everything we need to suit our party of 18 ages from 878, the countryside views surrounding this property are breath taking. Its approximately 810 minutes from a lovely little town with 23 pubs, convenience stores, tennis court, childrens park, river, railway and an handy medical centre to name a few. The kitchen was the heart of the house leading through into a dining room that can serve dinner and play hours of games in. Everywhere was clean and tidy the bed sheets were lovely and the pillows on the beds were probably the best Ive seen in a holiday house. There are extra bath shower towels but also a washing machine and tumble dryer in the utility area. The cottage adjoining the house was a great addition note there isnt a fridge in the cottage only a double fridge freezer, single tall fridge and a single tall freezer in the main house. It is situated next to a working farm but you dont notice it. The hot tub is a fantastic addition seats 8 people and the kids loved the Bluetooth music option. The bedrooms are clean and comfortable, however the bed in bedroom 4 does need replacing the bed was incredibly creaky and noisy. The mattress was also uneven and bumpy. Other than this one recommendation the house was lovely we had the most amazing family holiday.
First class we all thoroughly enjoyed the holiday and the area , which was new to all of us.
Ashley
What an amazing place to stay, the house is really great and spacious with an amazing games room and new patio BBQ, sheltered and hot tub area. Spent time here for my 50th with my family and weve said we will book again,
Thomas
Really enjoyed our time in your property. House had everything we needed and was really well maintained. Can't recommend it highly enough!
The property was perfect for our weekend away. We couldn't have been happier with the house and the facilities provided and the owner was awesome and made our stay flawless.
We had a fantastic weekend! The only issue was the intense smell of gasoil.
Thomas
This was genuinely one of the worst holiday homes I have ever stayed in. There were issues with cleanliness, the hot tubs were in a disgraceful condition and when we asked for some money back the Owner point blank refused to communicate with us. Do not stay here.
Problems not dealt with by Sykes or the owner
Lettita
Great stay. Owner was very welcoming. Always a phone call away if we needed help. Can get over how big the property was. Lovely bbq area. The games room was also a place we spend a lot of our time. The only thing that we could say is that the hot tubs took a very long time to heat up with constant fire wood, so we could not enjoy the hot tubs until late evening.
We all had an absolutely fantastic holiday beautiful house would highly recommend, will definitely be returning
Stayed here as a large familyfriends groups with children ranging from under 1 to teenagers. Enough space to accommodate everyone. Kids loves games room. Any problems we had the owner was straight over to review. Hot tubs could do with having coverslids to keep clean and would of been nice to have been filled and started to heat before we got there as they take a while to get to a good temperature. Overall lovely stay for 2 nights.
Hot tub cleanliness needed attention. On a working farm which was fine except the huge pile of cow manure very close to the house which meant a huge number of flies in the kitchen. Very limited pieces of cooking equipment such as oven trayssaucepans and those there were too small considering the size of the house and the number of people being catered for. Outside drain blocked Wifi went down on day 2 and was not fixed throughout our stay
